The purpose of UIRB is to build ca
pacity to recognize and reduce implicit racial bias by providing participan
ts with a Brave Space environment in which to explore and challenge their o
wn beliefs and attitudes about bias, to practice better ways of talking to
one another about microaggressions and stereotypes, and to begin to have co
nversations with one another about how implicit racial bias affects our att
itudes, beliefs and behaviors.
Defined as a learning exchange, rather than as a trai
ning, UIRB is both a guided educational experience which uses a standard cu
rriculum and a facilitated discussion that encourages and supports particip
ants’ active involvement in the learning exchange. A team of intensively-tr
ained facilitators with a background in child and family welfare and a comm
itment to understanding and reducing implicit racial bias lead the learning
exchange.
