Understanding Trauma - Level 2- Self-Care (Peterson)

This course will review lifespan consequences of trauma on an individual/community and staff’s role as protectors and educators.  Participants will learn what can happen to them as they operate in highly stressful environments and how to take care of themselves.  They will also learn how to engage in and explore concrete processes to stabilize attachment, develop safe relationships and effective emotional management.  *This training includes multiple breaks and interaction/engagement activities. 

Intended Audience: Direct Care/Front-Line Staff & Supervisors; Beginner staff (less than 1-2 years of experience) & refresher for experienced staff
 
OBJECTIVES:
  • Participant will understand the four areas of child development: PIES 
  • Participants will have an understand stress factors and behavioral reactions to stress responses
  • Participants will understand how to identify personal indicators of stress
  • Participants will understand the relationships between trauma and resilience factors
  • Participants will understand their role in working with youth with trauma
  • Participants will understand the need for self-care for self preservation and benefits for the clients they serve
  • Participants will create their own self-care plan (identify emotional supports, de-escalation for self, mindfulness)

Trainer: Billy Claywell - Billy W. Claywell, LMSW has been in the human service field since 1988. He has worked as an in-home service provider, supervisor of a family preservation project, administrator of a family and children’s program, grant writer, and is currently the Clinical Director for Corinthian House and provides therapy for their residents.
 

Registration will begin at 8:30 AM. Training will start promptly at 9:00 AM. Lunch will be provided and will function as a working lunch. This training is scheduled until 3:00 PM.

If this training is rescheduled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances the backup date is scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, 2024. 

Please note: Priority seating is provided to staff working within one of the current DHS child welfare service contracts, including: Family Centered Services (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP) / Group Foster Care; Child Welfare Emergency Services (CWES): Aftercare Services; Supervised Apartment Living (SAL); Recruitment, Retention, Training and Support Services (RRTS); Parent Partners; Foster Care Youth Council. If you do not work within one of the current DHS child welfare services contract, you may be bumped from the course and placed on a wait list.
