Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is a person-centered counseling technique utilized to elicit behavior change. This practice session will focus on developing a collaboration relationship with individuals to explore and resolve ambivalence to support change aligning with one’s own personal values and concerns. The session will build upon a prerequisite eLearning course to deeper explore and demonstrate the principles of Motivational Interviewing.

It is *Highly Recommended* you to take a pre-learning course prior to this in-person course. A basic knowledge of MI will be needed for this training, and that will not be covered in this in-person training. If you have a Relias account, you can take two short trainings, Introduction to Motivational Interviewing REL-BHC-0-IMI and Use of Motivational Interviewing in Clinical Practice REL-BHC-0-UMICP.  TRAINERS:

Eileen Swoboda, MSW, LISW, has worked in the child welfare system for 30 years. She has worked in group and residential care. She began her career as a foster care worker with both local and unaccompanied refugee minor children from Southeast Asia. She has provided counseling services to children and families with multiple concerns at Lutheran Services in Iowa and, currently, at Compass Clinical Associates in Des Moines. Her special interest is working with play therapy with children and their parents, and she incorporates a trauma informed perspective focused on building resilience. She has conducted numerous trainings and workshops across Iowa and provided training and consultation for churches, schools, attorneys, Juvenile Court professionals, NASW, Visiting Nurse Services, DHS and various family service agencies. Since 2000, Eileen has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Iowa Graduate School of Social Work, where she developed her appreciation and use of Motivational Interviewing.
Angela Hample 
has spent the last five years working with families that are struggling with everyday life issues and supporting them to increase their resiliency and family stability.  In 2019, Angela graduated from Buena Vista University with her Masters of Science in Education and received her temporary mental health counseling license from the State of Iowa. Angela enjoys working with mental health and substance abuse clients while completing her licensure hours. In July of 2020, Angela began her current position at Family Access Center as the training coordinator. Angela is currently certified to teach/train Motivational Interviewing, SafeCare, and is in the completion stages of Solution Based Casework train the trainer. Prior to obtaining her MS, Angela had worked in the office supplies/newspaper business as a supervisor part of the management team for eight years and following that moved to the executive assistant to the CEO for a heavy equipment parts supplier where she worked closely with human resources, upper management and dispatch to ensure safety and financial responsibility. Angela returned to her home town of Spencer Iowa in 2013 to be close to her children and grandchildren. Angela enjoys spending time with her thirteen grandchildren. Angela is currently working on her doctorate in forensic psychology.

 Registration will begin at 12:30pm. Training will begin promptly at 1pm. This training is scheduled until 4pm. 

Please note: Priority seating is provided to staff working within one of the current DHS child welfare service contracts, including: Family Centered Services (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP) / Group Foster Care; Child Welfare Emergency Services (CWES): Aftercare Services; Supervised Apartment Living (SAL); Recruitment, Retention, Training and Support Services (RRTS); Parent Partners; Foster Care Youth Council. If you do not work within one of the current DHS child welfare services contract, you may be bumped from the course and placed on a wait list.
