Tuesday, September 26, 2023, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM CDT
Category: Training

The training discusses appropriate current terminology to use and which words to avoid, places sexual orientation and gender identity in the child/adolescent development span, addresses disclosure and documentation of identity, and how to recognize when an identity is driving a family crisis that may result in removal or delay reunification.  It also addresses how to affirmatively care for LGBTQ identified youth in foster homes or in congregate care settings.

Kai McGee has been in Iowa since 2009 and is the parent of twins who are 9 years old.  Kai has worked with children and families in various capacities for 26 years in two states.  In addition to serving as a foster parent in Iowa for 5 years, Kai worked exclusively in the field of foster care and adoption for Four Oaks from 2011 until 2020.  Additionally, Kai served as a reserve police officer in her home community for three years. Kai is the founder and president of the statewide advocacy coalition AFFIRM, has provided countless hours of community education and advocacy regarding the well-being of LGBTQ identified children and youth in out-of-home care settings, and is a champion for cultural equity for persons of all identities
