Calm Down: Understanding Basics to De-escalate Situations (Ankeny)

A client in a heightened state can exhibit challenging behaviors while also being a safety risk for those around them. This course will start to understand behaviors that may lead to a heightened state while share learning to identify situations may lead to de-escalation. Participants will learn to identify reactions to keep calm and remove oneself from a situation to maintain safety for all.

Trainer: Billy Claywell - Billy W. Claywell, LMSW has been in the human service field since 1988. He has worked as an in-home service provider, supervisor of a family preservation project, administrator of a family and children’s program, grant writer, and is currently the Clinical Director for Corinthian House and provides therapy for their residents.
 

Audience: FCS Staff

Objectives:
1. Participants will learn 5 Universal Truths that everybody needs
2. Participants will learn causes of anger
3. Participants will learn to use verbal and body language to help clients return to baseline
4. Participants will be able to utilize LEAP to help clients achieve baseline

Registration will begin at 12:30PM. Training will start promptly at 1:00PM. This training is scheduled until 4pm.

Please note: Priority seating is provided to staff working within one of the current DHS child welfare service contracts, including: Family Centered Services (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP) / Group Foster Care; Child Welfare Emergency Services (CWES): Aftercare Services; Supervised Apartment Living (SAL); Recruitment, Retention, Training and Support Services (RRTS); Parent Partners; Foster Care Youth Council. If you do not work within one of the current DHS child welfare services contract, you may be bumped from the course and placed on a wait list.
