This course is an introduction to domestic violence concepts and how they relate to family and child welfare. Participants will learn about what domestic violence is, how to identify various tactics of abuse, and how domestic violence impacts children from birth through their adolescent years. The training will also explore how domestic violence impacts parenting and how professionals can help promote resilience and healing in families experiencing this type of trauma.

Intended Audience: Family Centered Services Staff (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program Staff (QRTP), Shelter Staff (Child Welfare Emergency Services), Supervised Apartment Living Staff (SAL); Recruitment/Retention Training Support Staff (RRTS) Direct Care/Front-Line Staff and Supervisors

Kirsten Faisal - 
Director of Training and Technical Assistance (she/her), Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence: Ms. Faisal has worked in this role since 1995. Before joining ICADV, she was a direct service provider for ten years. Ms. Faisal helps develop public policy and programming across Iowa and provides consultation and training to professionals whose work supports and impacts survivors of domestic violence. She collaborated in initiatives to establish domestic abuse protocols in hospitals and reproductive care clinics.  She engaged in Iowa’s response to the Welfare Reform Act of 1996, including training every income maintenance and child support recovery worker in the state. She served on Child Protective Services taskforces to make recommendations to the Iowa legislature on adopting a differential response approach; make changes to the child abuse registry; and adopting and rolling out the Safe and Together model. Within the court system, she has presented in multidisciplinary trainings for the attorney general’s office on strangulation, restraining orders, trauma, and victim services, as well as serving as an expert witness in criminal and civil cases. She  coauthored one of the first curriculums in the nation for women convicted of domestic abuse. A paper she wrote on “Social Justice From the Margins” was presented at the Commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act by the Obama White House.  She graduated with honors from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and spent eleven years doing crisis intervention work.

 

Registration will begin at 9:00AM. Training will begin promptly at 9:30AM. This training is scheduled until 12:30PM.

  3. Professional Conduct: Treat trainers and fellow participants with respect. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
  4. Confidentiality: Respect the confidentiality of personal or sensitive information shared during the training.
  5. Inclusivity: Contribute to a welcoming, non-discriminatory environment. Respect diverse perspectives.
  6. Technology (For virtual sessions): Ensure you have a stable internet connection and appropriate technology. Keep your camera on and mute your microphone when not speaking.

 

Please note: Priority seating is provided to staff working within one of the current DHS child welfare service contracts, including: Family Centered Services (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP) / Group Foster Care; Child Welfare Emergency Services (CWES): Aftercare Services; Supervised Apartment Living (SAL); Recruitment, Retention, Training and Support Services (RRTS); Parent Partners; Foster Care Youth Council. If you do not work within one of the current DHS child welfare services contract, you may be bumped from the course and placed on a waitlist.
