This training discusses appropriate current terminology to use and which words to avoid, places sexual orientation and gender identity in the child/adolescent development span, addresses disclosure and documentation of identity, and how to recognize when an identity is driving a family crisis that may result in removal or delay reunification. It also addresses how to affirmatively care for LGBTQ identified youth in foster homes or in congregate care settings. Intended Audience: Family Centered Services Staff (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program Staff (QRTP), Shelter Staff (Child Welfare Emergency Services), Supervised Apartment Living Staff (SAL); Recruitment/Retention Training Support Staff (RRTS) Direct Care/Front-Line Staff and Supervisors Location Info: Zoom Trainer:Kai McGee, Four Oaks RRTS Statewide Director, BS - Kai McGee has 27 years of experience in child welfare work, and has been working to address systemic inequities of all types, but most particularly those related to LGBTQ-identified youth in out-of-home care, in Iowa since moving to the state in 2009. Kai’s efforts have contributed to Iowa’s first strategic plan to intentionally recruit LGBTQ affirming foster/adoptive families, development and delivery of comprehensive LGBTQ cultural competency training for foster parents, child welfare/juvenile justice professionals, mental health providers and educators, continuous advocacy for HHS/JCS adoption of LGBTQ inclusive best practices for youth in out-of-home care, and Four Oaks’ adoption and implementation of one of the most comprehensive non-discrimination policies and associated practices of any of Iowa’s child and family serving non-profit organizations.
